1st Grade Technology

3rd Trimester Summary

The students began their trimester studying Dr. Seuss’s AABB rhyming structure. In Pages, the students created verses using Dr. Seuss’ Word Families.

They then learned a new application, Garageband. They created 1-2 minute songs using loops and sound effects.

We discussed the use of Technology and how it impacts our daily lives.  Using Pixie, they listed 5 things they can do with a computer.

The students created an “All About Me” Trading Card in Pixie.

Throughout the trimester the students logged into their accounts at edutyping.com to practice their keyboarding skills.

 

2nd Trimester Summary

The students began their Trimester with learning a new Typing Program, Typing Pal. This program has exercises and short practice texts to help the students increase their keyboarding speed and accuracy.

All first-grade students participated in the worldwide event, “Hour of Code” in December. We began our coding unit in November, by discussing how code is used in our world and its importance. The concepts of patterns, loops, and debugging were then reinforced by working at two different coding websites.

The students then worked on a multi-week unplugged coding activity where the students created their own board games. We looked at the history of board games and discussed similarities and differences between ones we played. We brainstormed “word blocks” for the squares of our game board: move 2 forward, skip a turn, roll again, etc. We then discussed how to come up with a theme for their game. They then created their game in Pixie, researching stickers that matched their theme and word blocks for each of their squares.

For Valentine’s Day, the students created a Valentine for a family member by choosing a joke or saying from a provided list. They learned how to incorporate punctuation into their project by using the ?, ‘, and ” keys.

We concluded our trimester with three weeks of studying robotics. We defined as a class what a robot is and what sensors and  features a robot must have to navigate through different situations and solve different problems.

They began by creating their own robot at PBS Kids Robot Workshop We then progressed to moving a R.O.V.E.R. (Remote Operated Vehicular Errand Runner) through a maze of different terrain to collect items. The students had to choose which wheels were best and solve puzzles along the way.

In pairs, the students were given a Code-a-Pillar  and plugged in coding blocks to the head of the robot to navigate through self-created obstacle courses.

We concluded the unit, by working with the Finch  robot. This robot was connected to their computer and they programmed it’s sensors with an online coding program SNAP. 

1st Trimester Summary

The students began their trimester by brushing up on their keyboarding skills with their own accounts at Edutyping. We  began our digital citizenship  curriculum by Common Sense Media.  Topics included “Going Places Safely” and “ABC Searching.”

We then read the book, “My Head is Full of Colors” by Catherine Friend and discussed the many interests and talents we all possess. Students made mind maps using the Kidspiration program to record these interests and ideas. They also made a project in Pixie using their photo.

For Halloween, the students created a 4 page story booklet t in Pixie by searching for Halloween words and images.

For the Day of the Dead, the students made a Carata mask in Pixie.

Graphic Design and Font Types were then introduced as we worked on creating a 10 title film in iMovie. They picked words from a 1st-grade word list and choose a font type, color, and background to highlight the word.

Villa Technology Standards

First Grade Benchmarks:

  • Use screen layouts menus and icons to navigate in programs efficiently, save a file with their name in their class folder, quit out of a program, log in and out of their computer
  • Typing phrases, draw and edit, format, save and retrieve with assistance
  • Introduce proper two handed keyboarding position, home row keys, 5 WPM, 90 % accuracy

Technology Integration:  Students demonstrate the ability to use computer tools to accomplish tasks or complete projects related to classroom curriculum.
